Every year I usually sit and cry on my sofa on this day
Every day, I ask myself how I can look after myself a little today? Food, movement, rest, company, learning, working, sharing…
Some days rest is best.
Some days, like today, I got to hike. Out to the Peak District to see the big stones, to challenge myself.
And when it’s London Marathon Day, and I am often glued to the TV and well-up with tears as I hear all the inspiring stories of Why People Run.
I cry as I watch the elite men and women achieve extraordinary feats of human endeavour.
I feel tears prickle my eyes as I learn about the Londoners who’s courage, disabilities, abilities and determination have given them the honour of having a free pass to the Marathon start line as long as they live.
And for one man with stage 4 bowel cancer, he’s pretty certain this will be his last year alive on this earth.
And there he was running, to raise funds for charity so others can benefit in the future. Wow!
The dads of two of the three girls who lost their lives in Southport last year….Alice de Silva Aguiar and Elsie Dot Stancombe. And for Bebe King too. Such young lives – there is so much mourning in me for these young lives lost, and the pain of the families and community left behind, scarred by these shocking tragedies.
So now I’m watching the best of the Marathon highlights, and tears are leaking down my face.
Humanity at its best!
And whilst I may never do the London Marathon myself, I pay tribute to them all by watching, cheering them on and letting myself be moved by them.
Sending hugs to them all, and you too, if this would be welcome, with whatever your story, your loves and losses are.
I’m here for you, and with you. Get in touch if you need a good listening to, holding or exploring any of the burdens you are carrying.
If it feels too much to bear witness to this, or you feel overwhelmed by the enormity of what burdens you are carrying – know that you don’t have to muscle through alone.
I’m here to help and support and accompany you.
Sitting with you, listening in a particular way so you feel heard and understood – that is what I offer.
And to let myself be changed by you and what you share. This is powerful medicine.
If you want to talk, but don’t want to be therapied, then perhaps you can open up a little to me and share what’s going on.
We start where you are, just as you are, and like these amazing Marathon-runners, acknowledge all the steps that brought you here, and how of course you’ll be tired carrying all the weight of your traumas with you for so long, and begin to put down some of your burdens and rest a while, knowing you matter, that you are not alone and that whatever you did or didn’t do, of course, it’s ok.
