Constructive Rest for a Calmer Mind & Body

Monthly Guided Stress Relief Sessions

If your body feels tight, tired or overwhelmed, this monthly half hour online session offers a simple way to unwind. You will be guided through a gentle 30 minute practice based on the Alexander Technique to help your nervous system settle, your body soften and your mind feel a little clearer.

If you live with repetitive strain injury, carpal tunnel, backache, a stiff neck and shoulders, or you simply get uncomfortable sitting at a desk or standing in a queue, this space is for you. It is a chance to pause, reconnect with yourself and let your body rest and repair.

I have seen hundreds of people benefit from simple Constructive Rest helping them release tension and find more ease in everyday life.

You are warmly welcome to join me in a supportive, friendly environment where you can feel safe, accompanied and cared for.  Listen to your body sensations in new ways, and learn how to have a conversation with your body, and no longer be at war with it.

With Lucy Ascham

Trained in the Alexander Technique since 2003, Lucy Ascham specialises in a personalised approach to stress relief and well-being. Her practice, enriched with a trauma-informed perspective, focuses on embodied movements, posture improvement, and self-care techniques. Lucy champions Constructive Rest, a daily practice that promotes body-mind reconnection and recovery.

Self-Care is Not Selfish

  • Are you seeking a calmer path through life’s chaos that fits your busy schedule?
  • Want to learn how to release stress, tension, and anxiety at will?
  • Interested in guidance for better self-care, nurturing your body and mind?
  • Does making time for yourself come last amidst work, family, and other responsibilities?
  • Are you always pushing through until the weekend or next holiday, despite knowing it’s impacting your health?

Learning to rest is a powerful tool to learn how much energy you have in your tank, to know when to stop and when to go on. I invite you to put your well-being first by dedicating just 20 minutes to yourself. This way you can unlock the power of self-care and gain more energy and resources to handle life’s challenges.

I love offering Constructive Rest sessions as a practical tool for you to enjoy in the comfort of your own home. Although it is most effective when you lie down on a firm surface, you can sit and listen and this practice will support your back health, improve your posture and calm your mind. As poet and philosopher David Whyte beautifully puts it: “to rest is not self-indulgent, to rest is to prepare to give the best of ourselves.” Leave the session(s) feeling lighter, more relaxed and knowing how much energy you have for whatever comes next.

What are the benefits of the semi-supine position?

The semi-supine position offers several key benefits, positioning your body in an optimal way that allows the spine and the supportive muscles of your back to release tension. It alleviates compression in the lumbar spine and helps to ease pressure in the sacroiliac joint, providing significant relief. Additionally, this position has a calming effect on the body, mind, and emotions, fostering a state of relaxed alertness that promotes overall well-being.

"The semi-supine position provides so much support for the body, it is ideal for letting go of these tensions, for restoring lengthened muscles throughout the body, and for reestablishing the natural working of the postural neuromuscular reflex (PNR) system."

Previous Participants Share Their Experience

"I work at a computer a lot, sitting, using double screens, different heights and I find myself often leaning on one elbow. My neck, upper back, shoulders, arms all hurt. Observing how thinking and muscles are interconnected was an eye opener!"

Jill

"It was weird. A good kind of weird. I wasn't doing the breathing, a bigger breath just arrived all by itself when I stopped fixing my shoulders. Wow!"

Alison, Hope Valley

"BEST NIGHT'S SLEEP I'VE HAD IN YEARS. I attended a series of Alexander lessons - and feel a great weight has lifted off my shoulders. I appreciate your help very much Lucy. I feel now able to move on, and do other things differently. My balance and turning have improved, no more crackling in my neck when I move my head."

Helen, Teacher, Sheffield

“Working together with Lucy, I now very rarely have pain in my lower back and when I do experience tension I have the tools to resolve it. Seeing Lucy regularly has proved indispensable, and I highly recommend her."
