When Plans Go Awry: Finding Calm with Resonance

Does life throw you any curve balls?

Are their times when you think, hope, and plan for one thing to happen – and then it doesn’t?

Do you get left with a drop in your stomach and some shock of being alarmed and alone?

Recently, I turned up for a monthly online meeting with international colleagues across three time zones. No one else arrived. I waited, checked messages, hung around, and eventually realised I was alone. No one else was coming.

A tightness grew in my chest. Instead of pushing it away or distracting myself, I gently turned with warmth and curiosity to my body sensations:

  • Lucy do you need acknowledgement of alarmed aloneness? (Yes, a breath arrives.)
  • Did you stop breathing in that moment you realised no one was coming? (Yes, I did.)
  • Do you need acknowledgement of shock? (Yes, I nod.)
  • Do you need acknowledgement of fear? (Yes, how did I get it wrong?)
  • Do you need acknowledgement of shame? (Ah yes, my breath comes in and out more fully.)

With each acknowledgement, my breath began to move again. The tightness eased. I felt clarity returning.

This is one of nine aspects of Resonant Healing Language – naming body sensations, having someone else (or even another part of yourself) witness them, and showing warm curiosity.

Relational language

I am a certified practitioner of Resonant Healing Language, trained directly with its founder and my mentor Sarah Peyton https://sarahpeyton.com/events/

This work uses the best of neuroscience research to listen, attune, and help people heal with the precise use of language.

Resonant Healing Language is an extension of NonViolent Communication (NVC), founded by Marshall B. Rosenberg, PhD.

This beautiful work is now available to you through private 1:1 sessions with me.

Every day, people tell me things they have never said to anyone before. Your secrets are safe with me. Nothing is taboo. I make a welcoming space to be as safe as possible for you to feel your feelings and learn how to be kinder to yourself – whatever you’ve done, not done, or had happen to you. I will model this for you so your brain can begin to first have the experience of being warmly accompanied, and grow new neurons so you can begin to meet first yourself and others with this warmth.

You don’t have to muscle through alone, as you no doubt have in the past. Trauma is not just What happens, but How we are met afterwards matters deeply. If we are met with disinterest or only practical responses, the harshness lingers, Sarah calls this Alarmed Aloneness. And adds it to the survival mechanisms of Flight, Fright, Freeze and Alarmed Aloneness.

Even years later, when we are met with warmth and accompaniment, and can be gently understood in that place of Alarmed Aloneness, our brain comes out of Freeze, with this warm atonement, resonance and language can truly heal.

The Takeaway

Practicing ways of being kind to myself is never a waste of time. Practicing ways of meeting yourself with warmth is never a waste of brain energy. Practicing ways of being OK with yourself in every moment is a real gift.

Would you like to give yourself the gift of being kinder to yourself – body, mind, and emotions?

I’m here to accompany you and support you. https://lucyascham.com/whats-on/

Warm wishes

❓ Frequently Asked Questions about Resonant Healing Language

What is Resonant Healing Language?

Resonant Healing Language is a neuroscience‑based practice developed by Sarah Peyton. She is a neuroscience educator and Certified NonViolent Communication coach. It uses precise, compassionate words and language tools to bring warmth and understanding to past experiences, helping the brain integrate trauma and restore self‑connection.

How is Resonant Healing Language connected to NonViolent Communication?

It is an extension of NonViolent Communication (NVC), founded by Marshall B. Rosenberg, PhD. Resonant. He focused on our intentions to be present and connect, and listen and use Feels and Needs based language to promote truth and connection. Resonant Healing Language builds on NVC by adding 8 further language tools, based in brain research, neuroscience insights and specific language patterns that help people feel deeply accompanied and understood.

How do I know if this work is right for me?

If you have ever felt stuck in old patterns of shame, fear, or alarmed aloneness, Resonant Healing Language can help. Many clients tell me things they have never shared before, and together we create a safe space for healing.

What happens in a session?

In a private 1:1 session, I listen carefully, attune to your body sensations and emotions, and offer resonant language that helps shift traumas from the right hemisphere where their are no words or time – into integrated and time-stamped memories which then get filed away as lived experiences. There is no fixing or forcing – just gentle accompaniment and curiosity. Supporting your brain to heal.

Can Resonant Healing Language help with trauma?

Yes. Trauma is not just what happens, but how we are met afterwards makes all the difference. Even years later, when met with warmth and resonance, the nervous system can heal. This work helps you feel accompanied, understood, and kinder to yourself.

What My Clients Say

“No pain in the night, no pain when I got up, no pain when I went for a run and no pain now! It’s much more than I expected, thank you! "

Steve

"It is as though I have been gifted an entirely new lens through which to view human behaviour, and it is a lens of compassion and empathy like no other. Due to this, I have been able to come to terms with the way my family operates, which has proven to be a great relief. I would definitely recommend working with Lucy. She held such a safe space for me and my vulnerability with great compassion and authenticity."

Elena

"Using these techniques has helped me reduce the day-to-day tension I’ve developed over a lifetime of anxious habits and hypersensitivity. It’s been amazing to re-learn how my body works, and how to swap out the survival mechanisms that got me so far, for habits more in keeping with how my body is happier to work."

Alex Booer

“I’ve been doing the Alexander Technique with Lucy over the past few months and my posture has improved enormously. I have a greater awareness of how my body functions and can recognise the signs of when I’m falling into bad habits."

Paul Tolton, Actor

"I feel present. Nice to feel here, not racing ahead. I have a more measured, calm approach. I’m less reactive and am learning to look after myself and choose my responses.”

Rosie

"I had a traumatic accident a few years ago. After you ‘wriggled’ my head it felt weird – and really good. I could walk evenly for the first time in years!! I’m making friends with my body.”

Zoe, Singer

"I have been happily surprised and have learned a lot about how my muscles and spine behave when I let them. I rapidly realised that AT is not in the least pseudoscience, rather it teaches one to be aware of how the body is holding itself."

Julian Davis, Retired Professor of Medicine & Pianist

"I've just had two enjoyable and useful sessions with Lucy on Zoom. I had been doubtful about how it would work but I was pleased with how it went. Of course, nothing is as good as face-to-face but we are where we are and this was great and has helped me to progress as I had hoped. Thank you. Looking forward to the next ones!"

Bev

"Lucy's sessions are amazing. Her unique blend of skills helped me have good posture without effort. Before this, I had seen many physiotherapists and osteopaths, but the pain kept coming back within a few weeks. Even after my first session with Lucy, the difference was so clear that my friends commented on it. After several months, the effects are being maintained with her support."
