Letting Go of What You Don’t Need
“People do not decide their futures, they decide their habits and their habits decide their futures.” – F.M. Alexander
This week, I’ve been decluttering – not just my home, but my body and mind. It started with a quiet urge to simplify. I cleared out drawers, moved furniture, and let go of things I no longer needed. But as I moved through the physical space, I noticed something deeper: the clutter wasn’t just in my living room. It was in my body.
A Client’s Story: The Habit That Stayed
One client came to me with persistent shoulder tension. She had tried massage, stretching, and posture exercises, but nothing seemed to help. As we explored her movement habits using the Alexander Technique principles, she realised she was still bracing her shoulders every time she walked into a room – something she had started doing years ago during a stressful job.
The job was long gone. But the habit remained. She needed this emotional armour at one stage in her life, but not all day now.
My gentle touch helped her notice the pattern for herself. She learned to pause, redirect her thinking, and allow her body to move with more freedom. Over time, the tension eased – not because she forced it, but because she stopped reinforcing it.
Movement Habits Are Like Clutter
We all accumulate movement habits – ways of holding ourselves that once made sense but now go unnoticed and can sometimes cause or sustain pain.
✔ Standing on one leg because it felt cool in school ✔ A hitch in your step from an old injury ✔ Lifting your chest and chin in photos to look confident ✔ Clenching your tummy when you see your reflection
These patterns are often unconscious. But they take up space. They interfere with ease, breath, and natural coordination.
The Alexander Technique helps you declutter these habits. It’s not about fixing posture – it’s about noticing – choosing Not To Do the Habit and choosing to organise internally before moving.
The Nervous System Reset
Another client shared that she felt constantly “on alert.” Her body was tight, her breath shallow, and she often felt exhausted. In our sessions, my goal was not to help her relax directly. Instead, I helped her notice what she was doing – how she was preparing for stress even when none was present. How this anticipation was always linked to extra effort, breath-holding and clenching.
As she learned to pause and redirect, her nervous system began to settle. She felt more grounded, more spacious, and more herself.
This is the power of the Alexander Technique for nervous system regulation. It’s not a quick fix. It’s a gentle reset. These are tools you get to have and use in your daily life.

The Alexander Technique is a gentle, educational method that helps you release unnecessary tension, improve posture, and move with more ease. It teaches you to notice habits that interfere with natural coordination and replace them with better choices.
How does the Alexander Technique help with posture?
Instead of forcing a fixed position, the Technique helps you find dynamic balance from moment to moment.
