Health Constellations: Exploring the Hidden Links Between Illness, Family Patterns, and Healing

Discover how systemic health constellations reveal hidden family dynamics behind chronic illness and create space for healing and ease.

Exploring the Hidden Links Between Body, Illness, and Family

What if your illness or disease were not only medical conditions but representatives of something deeper – stories, patterns, even ancestral echoes, messages?

In my upcoming Systemic Family Constellations Workshop in Sheffield https://lucyascham.com/whats-on, we will step into a space where symptoms take form. For example, my Type 1 Diabetes, Coeliac Disease, and Osteoporosis could each be represented by a different person, positioned within the constellation.

Where Would They Stand?

If we were gathered in a room together, where would I stand?

I wonder would the person representing Type 1 Diabetes stand close, demanding constant attention? Or slightly further away, shaping my daily routine but never entirely overwhelming? Would Coeliac Disease hover at the edges, hyper‑vigilant, scanning for threats I cannot afford to overlook? Would Osteoporosis feel silent but heavy, an invisible presence shaping every move, subtly reinforcing fear?

These possibilities all make sense intellectually.

But in a Constellation, we set aside what we have heard or read, what we think we know. We are not acting or playing make‑believe, this is not drama. We simply trust each of our body sensations and see how we actually respond.

There is no “trying to please” here.

We follow the inner movement to guide us, which may say: Turn. Look. Move closer. May I touch?

And how would I feel looking at them?

Would I want to turn away from the burden of blood sugar highs and lows? Would I want to push Coeliac Disease further back, wishing it did not complicate every meal and social interaction? Would I feel resentful, exhausted, or strangely connected to them?

These reactions make sense. And in the Constellation, we stay open to what is underneath and allow something new to emerge.

What Might This Reveal?

As a facilitator, I might ask: has chronic illness appeared in my family before?

Yes. My father and an aunt had Multiple Sclerosis. What patterns exist? What loyalties might I be holding without realising? Am I unconsciously remembering someone through my own symptoms? Am I, in some way, atoning for something that an ancestor did?

These are not questions with simple answers, but ones that invite deep listening – to the body, to hidden relational ties, to the stories woven through generations.

Why Health Constellations Matter

The body holds wisdom far beyond what we consciously know. Through Family and Systemic Constellations, we can begin to see the interconnectedness of illness, identity, and ancestral influences – how patterns live in our muscles, emotions, and choices.

In the workshop, we use embodied exploration with the help of others in the space. The constellation allows us to feel the burdens our families have carried, to recognise what was survived, endured, or unconsciously passed down.

And then – through gentle facilitation and healing sentences – we begin to return what does not belong to us.

A Path Toward More Ease

This process is not intellectual – it is deeply felt. There is often laughter and relief, and sometimes tears as we untangle old patterns, letting ourselves step into a life that is more fully our own.

We start off as strangers, and by the end of the day, you may have represented someone’s mother, sister, symptom, or ancestor. Usually there are hugs and closeness as we realise how much our own stories overlap with others. How interconnected we are.

There is healing available to everyone who attends, not just the ones who are the focus of the constellation.

If this resonates with you – if you would like to explore how illness, family, and embodiment intertwine – I invite you to join me for the next Constellations Workshop. https://lucyascham.com/whats-on/

There is nothing to “fix.” What if you are not broken, but entirely human, and make so much sense? There is, however, deep recognition and the possibility of a freer, lighter way forward. I will support you every step of the way.

Warm wishes

Lucy

❓ Frequently Asked Questions about Health Constellations

What are health constellations?

Health constellations are a branch of systemic constellations that explore the hidden links between illness, family patterns, and ancestral influences. They help uncover unconscious loyalties and burdens – messages – that may manifest as physical symptoms.

How do health constellations differ from family constellations?

Family constellations focus on relational dynamics within the family system. Health constellations extend this lens to include physical symptoms and chronic conditions, exploring how they may represent unresolved family and systemic history.

What kinds of issues can health constellations help with?

They can support people living with chronic illness, autoimmune conditions, unexplained symptoms, or persistent health challenges. The process often brings clarity, some relief, and a sense of belonging.

Do I need to share my medical history?

No. Health constellations are not medical treatment. They are an embodied, therapeutic exploration of hidden patterns. You do not need to provide detailed medical records to benefit from the process.

What My Clients Say

“No pain in the night, no pain when I got up, no pain when I went for a run and no pain now! It’s much more than I expected, thank you! "

Steve

"It is as though I have been gifted an entirely new lens through which to view human behaviour, and it is a lens of compassion and empathy like no other. Due to this, I have been able to come to terms with the way my family operates, which has proven to be a great relief. I would definitely recommend working with Lucy. She held such a safe space for me and my vulnerability with great compassion and authenticity."

Elena

"Using these techniques has helped me reduce the day-to-day tension I’ve developed over a lifetime of anxious habits and hypersensitivity. It’s been amazing to re-learn how my body works, and how to swap out the survival mechanisms that got me so far, for habits more in keeping with how my body is happier to work."

Alex Booer

“I’ve been doing the Alexander Technique with Lucy over the past few months and my posture has improved enormously. I have a greater awareness of how my body functions and can recognise the signs of when I’m falling into bad habits."

Paul Tolton, Actor

"I feel present. Nice to feel here, not racing ahead. I have a more measured, calm approach. I’m less reactive and am learning to look after myself and choose my responses.”

Rosie

"I had a traumatic accident a few years ago. After you ‘wriggled’ my head it felt weird – and really good. I could walk evenly for the first time in years!! I’m making friends with my body.”

Zoe, Singer

"I have been happily surprised and have learned a lot about how my muscles and spine behave when I let them. I rapidly realised that AT is not in the least pseudoscience, rather it teaches one to be aware of how the body is holding itself."

Julian Davis, Retired Professor of Medicine & Pianist

"I've just had two enjoyable and useful sessions with Lucy on Zoom. I had been doubtful about how it would work but I was pleased with how it went. Of course, nothing is as good as face-to-face but we are where we are and this was great and has helped me to progress as I had hoped. Thank you. Looking forward to the next ones!"

Bev

"Lucy's sessions are amazing. Her unique blend of skills helped me have good posture without effort. Before this, I had seen many physiotherapists and osteopaths, but the pain kept coming back within a few weeks. Even after my first session with Lucy, the difference was so clear that my friends commented on it. After several months, the effects are being maintained with her support."
