The Field Has No Distance
“The field is not bound by space or time.”
One of the most surprising discoveries of the past few years is how beautifully constellation work translates to Zoom. If you’ve ever wondered whether the field can travel through a screen, the answer is yes. Again and again, I’ve watched people who are miles apart feel the unmistakable pull of the knowing field. Representatives sense movements, impulses and emotions that belong to the system, just as clearly as they do in person.
There is an intimacy online that often takes people by surprise. The clarity is unmistakable. The field does not care whether we are in the same room or not. It simply responds to our attention, our presence and our willingness to see.
What I’ve witnessed online that surprised me
I’ve seen representatives on different continents turn at the same moment toward the same ancestor. I’ve seen someone feel a wave of grief at the exact second another representative reports a heaviness in the chest. I’ve seen a client’s face soften as a representative thousands of miles away speaks a sentence that lands as truth.
These moments remind me that the field is not physical. It is relational. It is systemic. It is consciousness meeting consciousness.
Love = Seeing plus distance minus judgement
Bert Hellinger offered this deceptively simple equation in his later work. It describes the stance required for deep systemic healing.
Seeing Acknowledging what is. Looking without flinching. Allowing the truth to be visible.
Distance Staying in one’s rightful place. Not merging, rescuing or taking on another’s fate.
Minus judgement Respectful neutrality. No exclusion. No moral ranking. Everyone belongs.
When these three elements come together, the Orders of Love are satisfied, and something in the system relaxes. Life begins to move again.
Why constellations work so well online
Because the field is not bound by space, the work becomes almost distilled on Zoom. There is less distraction – no worries about transport or chit chat in a new group. People drop into their bodies just as quickly. Representatives report sensations with the same clarity. Clients often feel safer in their own homes, which can support these deeper truth to emerge.
One of the nice things about Zoom is that everyone can see everyone’s faces. In a room, some people will be facing away from the Client or other witnesses, on Zoom we can see everyone’s responses, and this can be very touching. Reps simply report their distance and direction from other Reps.
The systemic lens also helps us see that our struggles are not personal failings. We are not stuck because we are insufficient. We are entangled with what our ancestors lived through and could not resolve. When we see this, compassion grows. Blame dissolves. And the system begins to reorganise itself. A small movement begins…
This work can seem magical at times, but it is grounded in phenomenology. Representatives online pick up sensations and truths they could not possibly know – here and now, in this moment. They embody the system’s story with accuracy that still astonishes me.
A final reflection
When someone asks if Constellations works online, I often say, well I don’t really understand how electricity works, or Zoom, but I know how to use them, its the same for this work, I don’t fully understand how it works, but I know how to use it.
If you’ve followed this series of my writing this month, perhaps you’ve already felt the depth and beauty of this modality. Constellations invite us to see what has been hidden, to soften where we’ve been braced, and to let life move again when it has been stuck.
If you feel stuck, or if something in you is longing for movement or a new perspective, I encourage you to explore this work. With me, or with another facilitator you trust. In person, 1:1, on line or in a group – the choice is yours, geography is no limit.
Please don’t stay stuck. See what can emerge, soften and heal.
I wish you well and hope to see you
