Better Late Than Never: A Gentle Invitation to Yourself
Deadlines have never been my best friends. I resist them, push them aside, delay getting started – and yet, when I finally settle into whatever it is I’m meant to be doing, I often enjoy it. Because for me, the real aim is not just completion but enjoying the process. The moments themselves, the unfolding, the path.
And if that’s true for something as simple as getting started on a task, it’s also true for learning to live in a way that brings more ease, balance, and presence.
How we sit, how we breathe, how we move. Are these simple activities uncomfortable for you? Do you struggle to get comfortable or remember to breathe, or wonder how to move?
Guilt, Habit and the Work of Remembering
Some of my regular Alexander Technique Sheffield clients arrive sheepishly, apologetic before they even begin.
“I haven’t been very good this week.” “I didn’t pay attention to Alexander or my posture.” “My head was already down in my chest before I suddenly remembered!”
To which I usually reply: Of course!
Because here’s the truth – paying attention to ourselves, really paying attention in a particular way, is not something most of us were taught. It wasn’t modeled for us, wired into our thinking, or shown as something valuable. What we’re doing here – cultivating mindful self‑awareness – is countercultural.
It is simple, but not easy.
We are gently gardening new neuronal pathways, tending to our ability to first notice ourselves, to remember a little more often, and a little sooner, “I have a body. It is safe to be in this body. I am ready to start taking care of this body, right now”. Learning to take care of ourselves, not by adding more effort, but by subtracting unnecessary strain and tensions.
Stop Fixing. Start Letting.
If you’ve been trying to pull yourself up into better posture, tighten your tummy muscles, or hold your shoulders just right – please stop.
What would happen if, instead of adding effort and tension in pursuit of improvement, you simply let go of what isn’t needed?
FM Alexander taught that the key isn’t forcing change, but rather inhibiting the old way – interrupting unnecessary tension patterns and guiding yourself toward greater ease. It’s the practice of stopping what pulls you off balance and allowing whole coordination to emerge naturally.
Most of us as little kids, would have sat up with ease, bent to pick things up without strain and moved around with curiosity and freedom.
Ease and poise aren’t things we create. They were here all along, underneath our habits.
Curiosity, Not Perfection
Do you agree that training yourself to become more mindful is worthwhile? That movement toward improvement is better than chasing perfection? That good use of your mind, body, and emotions is already within us, waiting to be rediscovered – without bullying ourselves?
However old you are, whatever time of day it is, whatever diagnosis or limitation you carry – now is the only time to learn to take better care of yourself.
Learning this is not difficult. The principles are simple, much like meditation, driving, or learning an instrument. But relearning how to drive the human vehicle takes intention, guidance, and practice.
