Accept an Experience, But Resist a Diagnosis
A diagnosis can be a powerful tool. It gives us information, guidelines, and sometimes the necessary instructions to take care of ourselves. But a diagnosis can also become a limitation, a label that defines not just what we are experiencing but what we assume we can or cannot do.
FM Alexanderâs approach and discoveries invite us to step beyond labels and into the fullness of experience, where possibility still exists, even in the presence of difficulty.
What Is a Diagnosis, Really?
At its simplest, a diagnosis is a heading, a way to categorize a set of symptoms and predict patterns. It is helpful in organizing information, but it is also static, often failing to consider the dynamic nature of healing. Our bodies are always trying to repair, to heal, and to return to wholeness.
If I had simply accepted the label of âfrozen shoulderâ recently, I might have resigned myself to waiting for time to pass, for healing to happen on its own. Instead, I took my body into gentle movements, into nature, into a shifting environment where small adjustments had the space to take effect without force.
Healing Through Movement and Awareness
Perhaps my recent camping trip helped me heal. The simplicity of living outdoors meant I avoided movements that would have fed the pain. Sleeping on firm ground may have allowed tightness in my muscles to release naturally. The hills, fresh air, and nourishing food supported my body. Stepping away from work gave my nervous system a chance to settle.
But the real difference was deeper. I slowed down, brought attention to my full self and my movements, and observed the small habits that have been contributing to and reinforcing pain. I applied Alexanderâs principles with renewed commitment. Subtle and delicate and precise.
Whatever the combination, I left the campsite with more movement, less pain, and the ability to do things that had seemed impossible just days before. I could throw and catch a ball, carry a rucksack for hours, and even sleep on my right side.
Choice, Freedom, Technique, Thinking
These are the ingredients that bring lasting change. Within any diagnosis, there is still choice. Within any limitation, there is the potential for movement, if we pay attention and do not rush past the moment where change can begin.
Saying Yes to Reality, Then Moving Forward
It is important to say yes to What Is, to acknowledge what the body is experiencing in real time. Truthâtelling is the first step in selfâcare. Once we say yes to reality, we also recognise that this moment is only one moment, and we have the power to shape what happens next.
The work I do daily with myself and clients at Alexander Technique in Sheffield offers a way to step beyond automatic responses, beyond limiting narratives, and into a new direction. Healing is not just about addressing symptoms. It is about not adding fear, stress, and resistance onto what is already challenging.
Instead, we notice. Simply observe. We allow ourselves to be breathed. We take care of our whole selves. And from this vantage point, we can ask: What is the best choice I can make for my entire being right now?
Real Stories of Healing with the Alexander Technique
One of my recent clients has advanced back cancer. Others with the same condition in Sheffield need additional home care for basic tasks like putting on socks or showering. This person is still able to do all these movements, slowly and carefully, while maintaining independence and creativity.
Many of the movements that once stimulated pain were recognised as lifelong habits set up before the cancer diagnosis, even as a teenager. By slowing down and applying Alexander principles, they now often have moments to experience freedom from pain. Yes, surgery and treatment were still necessary, but the Alexander Technique has helped improve the quality of their life. And that, they say, is priceless.
