“I am free to eat pizza on any day!”
Sometimes I come across a firmly held belief that stops me in my tracks.
These can be thoughts which are firmly entrenched. They have taken root and become firmly bedded in. Sometimes I have no idea where the idea comes from, sometimes I can remember precisely who and where and what I was doing when the belief first started.
The beliefs are often unconscious and unknown – until they rear their heads, often with a tone of shock or surprise!
I hope you enjoy this little story.
On Thursday I was talking to a client on the phone, and as I looked out of my front window I noticed a pizza delivery car pull up outside. Someone got out with two bags and knocked on a house nearby. I realised that they had ordered take-away pizza!
This is unheard of in my house. Take-away pizza! I love Pizza, and going out to a pizzeria, but I can’t remember the last time we had ordered a Take-away anything….
Somehow during lock-down it felt more surprising to me that someone would order pizza for a home delivery,
and on a Thursday,
And it was lunchtime!
More shock in my system at this last part of the realisation.
Lucy – do you need some acknowledgement of how you don’t have a shared reality with this experience? Are you in shock to realise that such different choices are being shown to you, outside your own front door? Yes indeed.
We only eat pizza in the evening, and any pizza consumed at lunchtime would be cold leftovers from the night before.
This is something I can laugh at now, in terms of the limitations of my mind and imagination! Just because I haven’t, and don’t personally know of people ordering Pizza on a Thursday lunchtime, of course, we are free to eat pizza on any day! and at any time of the day.
There are many beliefs we carry about ourselves and the way the world Should Work. Perhaps you know some of these ideas – perhaps some are less visible.
Some of these habitual ideas or beliefs are known knowns, and some of them are unknown unknowns. And yet these beliefs and ideas can hold us in a particular mindset, mental pattern or posture. Our mind shapes our experience and our personality.
Some of us have ideas about how much we need to keep working, keep busy, only be helpful to other people and look after ourselves last. To do otherwise, can be unthinkable.
So I am laughingly giving myself the invitation to allow myself to eat pizza any day of the week and at any time of the day. Even for breakfast. Perhaps with ice cream, and on Tuesdays too.
