Alexander Technique vs Family Constellations

Unlocking Wellness: The Synergy of Alexander Technique and Family Constellations

In the realm of healthcare, ongoing or chronic pain often presents a perplexing challenge. Mainstream medicine often focuses on symptomatic relief through painkillers or surgical interventions, overlooking the underlying complexities of the human experience. This approach can lead to a disconnect between patients and their bodies, exacerbating their emotional and physical alienation.

My personal conviction is that chronic pain is a mixture of maladaptive habits, suppressed emotions, disconnection between body and mind, and unresolved trauma embedded within family systems. In this exploration, these two transformative techniques, the Alexander Technique and Family & Systemic Constellations, shine as beacons of hope and healing. I use both of these approaches in my private session work, allowing me to tailor my support to each individual’s starting point, objectives, and preferences.

The Alexander Technique: A Holistic Reformation

The Alexander Technique traverses an expansive terrain encompassing the body, beliefs, cultural conditioning, habitual thought patterns, and movements. Rather than viewing the body as an isolated entity, I work with it as part of an intricate system comprising cells, muscles, bones, fluids, and structures, woven with the fabric of the mind and emotions. And even these amazing ingredients are not complete until we breathe life into the body with our unique soul and how we interact with stimulus and our environment.

This technique guides us in relearning to better use ourselves for enhanced functionality. A blend of subtlety and insight, the Alexander Technique serves as both a practical problem-solving self-help tool and a catalyst for wider transformation. It empowers individuals to unravel the enigma of self, uncovering concealed barriers and hurdles, while nurturing conscious, fluid movement. We are working with the whole person – bit by bit, and all together at the same time.

However, as transformative as the Alexander Technique may be, its reach sometimes fell short of the profound issues I’ve grappled with, including unearthing joy, financial concerns, relationship dynamics, and the intricate interplay of family patterns.

Unveiling the Depths: Family & Systemic Constellations

Family & Systemic Constellations venture beyond the realm of personal history, casting a wide net that encompasses families, communities, and we have roots in our country of origin and country of residence. It delves into unresolved intergenerational rifts and trauma, forged in the crucible of war, violence, migration, and other tumultuous experiences. As descendants of survivors, there is often some unprocessed trauma in what gets passed down in our genes.

This technique, whether offered in group workshops or one-on-one sessions, provides individuals with renewed perspectives and new insights to navigate their journey. It breathes life into stuck challenges that might have resisted other therapeutic approaches. Systemic constellation work imparts the love and wisdom of including all the elements of a concern or issue, acknowledging the intricate threads of relationships, elements, and people that contribute to a particular ailment’s manifestation. Only through this comprehensive inclusion can we restore order, find our rightful place and sense of belonging and in doing so transform energy to go forwards in our lives.

When the Alexander Technique is used alongside Systemic Constellations, the synergy can resource us and bring remarkable relief and change for chronic pain sufferers. Together, these approaches address both physical stumbling blocks and embedded traumas that unconsciously hinder healing. While the Alexander Technique uses the body as a conduit, Constellations work taps into the uncharted terrain of our soul and unresolved familial histories and heartfelt yearnings.

Real Stories: From Pain to Liberation

Clients often approach me after trying many therapies – talking and body work, and still they bearing the burden of chronic pain, grief or distress. One of these individuals was Julia, who sought relief for seven years of neck pain stemming from breast cancer surgery. Julia’s transformation journey commenced with the Alexander Technique. However, it wasn’t until the pandemic nudged me to explore innovative methods that I paired the technique with Constellations.

Working across continents, I guided Julia through understanding her body and its mechanisms, gradually helping her release tension and her pain’s grip lessened. An unexpected revelation about her grandfather’s death by strangulation sparked a new direction in our enquiry and her healing journey. By acknowledging and releasing this ancestral trauma, we liberated Julia from her neck pain’s stranglehold. Constellations work uses rituals, and healing sentences to restore the life flow for the individual and their family system at the same time.

Janet’s story similarly reflects the power of this combination of modalities. Struggling with agonizing shoulder pain, she sought help and came to me unable to scratch her head or get her jacket off at the end of a day’s work. A combination of Alexander’s discoveries and Family Constellations brought her immense relief. The Constellation work unearthed buried family dynamics, enabling her to release pain that had persisted despite prior interventions. Through these techniques, Janet reclaimed her pain-free life. If she misuses her mind-body during stressful times, she now has tools to work on herself and can easily steer herself towards more ease again.

Guiding Transformation: The Facilitator’s Role

My role in this intricate dance of healing isn’t to impose or fix but rather to be a mirror reflecting back the unexplored dimensions within each individual. Combining ritual, healing sentences, and family system restoration, I hold space for clients to embark on their journey towards accepting their reality and find new resources and balance. Some find their solution in a single session, while others uncover new threads to unravel over time. The combination of Alexander Technique and Constellations enables a deep exploration, guided by my own life experiences and attunement to the intricate tapestry of the human experience.

As I stand on everyone’s side in the family, my keen perceptions guide seekers and groups toward newfound insights. I believe that each person’s healing journey is unique, and the synergy of Alexander Technique and Family Constellations provides an amazing contribution for profound transformation. Whether you’ve wrestled with chronic pain for years or are seeking a deeper understanding of your embodied experience, the fusion of these approaches offers an invitation towards freedom and balance.

What My Clients Say

“No pain in the night, no pain when I got up, no pain when I went for a run and no pain now! It’s much more than I expected, thank you! "

Steve

"It is as though I have been gifted an entirely new lens through which to view human behaviour, and it is a lens of compassion and empathy like no other. Due to this, I have been able to come to terms with the way my family operates, which has proven to be a great relief. I would definitely recommend working with Lucy. She held such a safe space for me and my vulnerability with great compassion and authenticity."

Elena

"Using these techniques has helped me reduce the day-to-day tension I’ve developed over a lifetime of anxious habits and hypersensitivity. It’s been amazing to re-learn how my body works, and how to swap out the survival mechanisms that got me so far, for habits more in keeping with how my body is happier to work."

Alex Booer

“I’ve been doing the Alexander Technique with Lucy over the past few months and my posture has improved enormously. I have a greater awareness of how my body functions and can recognise the signs of when I’m falling into bad habits."

Paul Tolton, Actor

"I feel present. Nice to feel here, not racing ahead. I have a more measured, calm approach. I’m less reactive and am learning to look after myself and choose my responses.”

Rosie

"I had a traumatic accident a few years ago. After you ‘wriggled’ my head it felt weird – and really good. I could walk evenly for the first time in years!! I’m making friends with my body.”

Zoe, Singer

"I have been happily surprised and have learned a lot about how my muscles and spine behave when I let them. I rapidly realised that AT is not in the least pseudoscience, rather it teaches one to be aware of how the body is holding itself."

Julian Davis, Retired Professor of Medicine & Pianist

"I've just had two enjoyable and useful sessions with Lucy on Zoom. I had been doubtful about how it would work but I was pleased with how it went. Of course, nothing is as good as face-to-face but we are where we are and this was great and has helped me to progress as I had hoped. Thank you. Looking forward to the next ones!"

Bev

"Lucy's sessions are amazing. Her unique blend of skills helped me have good posture without effort. Before this, I had seen many physiotherapists and osteopaths, but the pain kept coming back within a few weeks. Even after my first session with Lucy, the difference was so clear that my friends commented on it. After several months, the effects are being maintained with her support."
